报告人简介

Dr. Hugh Fan is a University of Florida (UF) Research Foundation Professor in the Departments of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, and Chemistry. Prior to joining UF in 2003, he was a Principal Scientist at ACLARA BioSciences Inc. from 2000 to 2003 and a Member of the Technical Staff at Sarnoff Corp from1995 to 2000. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Ames Laboratory of the US Department of Energy at Iowa State University in 1994. Dr. Fans research interests include microfluidics, BioMEMS, flexible/stretchable electronics, sensors, cancer diagnosis and prognosis. He has authored ~80 journal articles that have been cited for more than 4800 times. In addition, he edited one book published by Wiley and authored over 45 book chapters and referred proceeding articles. Dr. Fans research efforts have been recognized by Fraunhofer-Bessel Award from Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (Germany), E.T.S. Walton Award from Science Foundation Ireland, and Career Award from National Institute of Health (USA).  He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and an editorial board member of Scientific Reports (Nature Publishing Group).

报告摘要:

Microfluidics is the platform technology that has a potential to impact several fields including chemistry, materials, and biology. The vision of miniaturizing a laboratory into a device in the size of a computer chip has been receiving significant interests from both academia and industries. Potential applications of the portable, miniaturized devices include point-of-care testing (e.g., in emergency rooms), environmental monitoring, and detection of biowarfare agents in the field.  In this presentation, a brief review will be given on the concept of microfluidics, device fabrication, and fluid manipulation in mcroscale, followed by discussion on their various applications including tumor cell isolation, high-throughput protein synthesis, and patterning techniques.
